Towards Sustainable Peace in Yemen

A Feminist Approach to Security and Preventing Violent Extremism (P/CVE)

Why This Project Matters?

The Reality on the Ground

In Yemen, years of war have shattered institutions and fractured communities. Amid these challenges, one truth stands out: peace is not possible without the full inclusion of women in decision-making about security and conflict resolution. Yet, traditional security efforts continue to exclude their voices — despite their crucial roles in families, communities, and early warning systems.

The Problem We're Tackling

·       Violent extremism is rising, often targeting the most vulnerable: women and marginalized communities.

·       Security policies rarely address the real needs of those most affected.

·       Women’s knowledge, experiences, and leadership are often ignored — weakening peace efforts.

Our Vision

What We Believe

We believe lasting peace in Yemen can only be achieved when:

·       Women lead and shape peace and security strategies.

·       Local voices — especially those of women — are included in every stage of policy-making.

·       Security efforts are designed not just for communities, but with them.

Our Approach

Feminist, Inclusive, and Grounded in Local Realities

This project, led by Peace Track Initiative (PTI), centers on a feminist peace model that amplifies the voices of women and local communities in Yemen. Here's how we’re doing it:

 Community Mapping & Dialogue

·       We’ll map Yemen’s current security system and policies, identifying key actors and where women’s voices are missing.

·       We’ll hold roundtables and consultations with at least 20 national leaders, including civil society, security experts, and grassroots women.

·       These discussions will directly shape Yemen’s Feminist Peace Roadmap, a living document of solutions rooted in real community needs.

 Capacity Building for Change

·       In Aden, we'll support the formation of a national task force to develop a gender-sensitive action plan for preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE).

·       Women will make up at least 50% of this team, ensuring meaningful representation.

·       We’ll train members in conflict analysis, gender inclusion, and drafting strategies that respond to local realities.

Launching a Locally Owned Action Plan

·       We’ll finalize and launch Aden’s P/CVE Action Plan during the 2025 Feminist Peace Summit, alongside over 200 women and men from across Yemen.

·       The launch will build momentum and public pressure to ensure implementation.

Who Benefits?

Direct Participants

·       Women leaders in civil society, politics, and security (25+)

·       Local officials and security personnel trained and equipped to adopt gender-sensitive methods

·       Community influencers working to prevent extremism

Indirect Reach

·       More than 300 additional leaders across Yemen’s local and central authorities

·       Communities in Aden and beyond who benefit from improved, inclusive, and sustainable peace and security strategies

Why Now?

Yemen is at a crossroads. The growing threats of violent extremism cannot be countered by traditional military strategies alone. It is time for a new, community-led, woman-centered, and future-focused approach.

The Peace Track Initiative has spent years building trust, networks, and experience in feminist peacebuilding across Yemen. With this project, we are turning knowledge into action — giving women not only a seat at the table, but the tools to lead.
