The Need for Protecting Women Human Rights Defenders in Yemen: Challenges and Civil Society Efforts

Category: Statement

This document presents a statement delivered by our colleague, Nadia Ebrahim, during a side event on Yemen. As the Protection Coordinator at the Peace Track Initiative (PTI), Nadia highlighted the escalating threats faced by Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs) in Yemen and the urgent need for comprehensive protection mechanisms.

In her statement, Nadia addressed the increasing human rights violations targeting WHRDs, including physical attacks, digital harassment, and smear campaigns, particularly in areas controlled by armed groups. She also emphasized the critical role of civil society organizations in advocating for protection services, supporting WHRDs at risk, and pushing for stronger international accountability mechanisms.

The statement further reflects on PTI’s efforts to document violations, mobilize international support, and advocate for a protection framework that ensures the sustainability of national mechanisms. It calls for a holistic approach that goes beyond documentation to include access to justice, protection grants, and structural reforms to eliminate discriminatory policies against women in Yemen.

Through this statement, PTI reiterates its commitment to defending human rights, supporting WHRDs, and working towards a safer and more just environment for women in Yemen.
